TAG MEETING NOTES

1/7/08

TLCP OPEN HOUSE – January 26, 2008

We are hosting our Open House on January 26, 2008 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM.  We are hoping for a large turn out and do need some additional parent volunteers to help on the playground and in the classrooms.  If you are available to help, please contact Becky Hicks.  Please note there will be a brief meeting for Open House volunteers on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:30 PM.

During the TAG meeting, we discussed the details of set up for the Open House.  We are going to be displaying some of the classroom artwork as well as many pictures of the children from the past few months.  You recently received a Photo Release Form that we need to have in order to display the pictures.  If you could ensure these are returned timely, it will allow TLCP to use any photos we receive.  In addition, if you have pictures from the past few months that you could share, please give them to Becky Hicks or Kelly Hendrickson.  We are hoping to have several pictures from each class to represent the Trinity experience, so any pictures you have would be helpful.

As mentioned in the last meeting notes, the Open House will be similar the first day of preschool.  The classrooms and playground will be open and the teachers and aides will be inside and outside their classrooms to answer questions and welcome visitors.  There will be activities for the children including activity tables outside each classroom and a face painter.  In addition, there will be tables that provide additional information specifically about Trinity Lutheran Preschool including information on our new parent discussion series, the ACE Program, the activities that make TLCP unique and the role of TAG.  There will also be light refreshments.

P3 – Preschool Parent Prep

As mentioned in our last letter, TLCP is sponsoring a series of discussions for preschool parents in the community.  The series has been named P3, standing for Preschool Parent Prep.  The first discussion date was changed to Wednesday, February 27 at 7:30 PM.  This discussion is designed to help parent gauge their child’s readiness for kindergarten.

There will be three subsequent discussion groups in March, April and May.  The topics for these discussions will be nutrition, discipline for the preschooler, and a CPR overview in English and Spanish.

These discussion groups are open to the general public and there is no charge to attend.  Flyers detailing the P3 Series have been printed will be available for distribution at the Open House.  We will also be providing flyers to TLCP parents in hopes that you can get the word out in the community.

SERVICE PROJECT – BEACH CLEAN UP – March 1, 2008

The beach clean up will take place on Saturday, March 1, 2008, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM.  We will be cleaning the area of Manhattan Beach near 42nd Street (North Manhattan) since there is parking available and this is an area that receives a lot of foot traffic and therefore would benefit greatly from our efforts.

An informational flyer and waiver of liability will be provided to all TLCP parents and an informational meeting will be set to collect the waivers and provide details for the clean up.  This is a great opportunity to teach our children about community service and we hope that all families will attend.  The more volunteers we have, the larger area we can clean.

A speaker from Heal the Bay will also be coming to TLCP prior to the clean up to talk about their work and the importance of protecting our environment.

As an additional service project, TAG is planning on setting up a donation to a women's shelter in February.  Donations will include clothing (men, women and children) and other child/baby items.  More details on the items needed and deadline for donation will be provided.

TAG also discussed the possibility of setting up a book drive to provide books to a preschool in the area that is in need of them.  This will be discussed in more detail at the next meeting.

FUNDRAISING

TLCP is planning an Ice Cream Social Fundraiser either at Glacier Ice Cream & Gelato or at the Creamery in Manhattan Beach.  The tentative date is May 20 and 20% of the proceeds from the ice cream sales will go directly to TLCP.  It is a great opportunity for all of the TLCP families to get together and enjoy some socializing and ice cream with the added benefit of providing money to the preschool.  More information on the finalized date and time will be provided after the next meeting.

Another fundraiser is being set up through Dream Dinners in Torrance.  Dream Dinners provides the ingredients and instructions to make dinners for your family that you store in your freezer.  You can go as an individual or in groups to make the dinners.  We will be setting up a four week period where you can go in and prepare your meals as a TLCP contributor.  A portion of the fees you pay at Dream Dinners will go to TLCP.  More information on this fundraiser will be provided in the next several weeks.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

As a follow up to our discussion in the last TAG meeting, the TLCP teachers provided the following brief list of items that are needed to improve the TLCP grounds:

    * New pedal cars to replace the ones that are starting to break

    * A new water table

    * A strong rolling tarp for the new sand area of the playground to ensure water does

        not get into the sand.

    * A heavy duty pump for the playground balls.

    * Tonka trucks or other diggers/dumpers for the sand area.

TAG also discussed the possibility of using fundraising money for a keypad entry system at front gate.  This is something the Church and preschool are already looking into.
